The world class academic institution, Lahore University of Management Science (LUMS) was founded in 1984 by the patronage of business-industrial community ‘Syed Babar Ali.’ The National Management Foundation (NFM) along with various other private and public sector corporations became the sponsoring body of the institution. The LUMS, its buildings and its land are all the property of NFM. The initial funds for the university were provided by the USAID. The Government of Pakistan agreed to grant a charter to the NFM in order to establish the University in 1985. The charter given to the University, made it a legal, autonomous degree awarding body. The government also gave the rights to LUMS of setting up other schools/faculties under its umbrella.
The primary aim of the LUM was to reckon itself among the top higher education institutions of South Asia. The university which was established as a mere graduate business school in 1986 showed remarkable growth and progress. By the year 1994, the LUMS expanded itself and introduced the first ever liberal arts undergraduate school. The university strongly believes in continued progress and development. Hence in 2004, The Department of Law ‘Law School’ was established under the portfolio of LUMS. The University launched ‘The Engineering School’ in 2008.Recently, the department of Education has been developed to offer various degree programs in the field of education.
The Business School of LUMS is one of the two schools in Pakistan that is certified by the South Asian Quality Assurance. It is one of the highly reputed and highly-ranked Business Schools in Pakistan. LUMS is a proud and distinguished member of the Association of Commonwealth.
LUMS is a highly reputed private sector university that is situated in the heart of the Lahore. The university is based in the urban setting of DHA, Lahore. The state of the art built campus is spread over 100 acres of land. Heavy investments have been done to create a remarkable infrastructure of LUMs. The multi-storied buildings house spacious fully air conditioned classroom, well-designed auditorium, well-resourced libraries, well equipped computer labs and resource centers. It is a generalization that the LUMS is an elite class University and therefore only the rich can afford to pay such high fees of the University. It is true that the University imparts premium and illustrious higher education at elevated fee structures. However many Financial aids and scholarships are offered by the LUMS to make sure no needy, deserving and capable student are deprived of their right to education. A National Outreach Program was launched by the LUMS in 2001 to offer financial aids to the students.
The university has strived to carve its niche and set high standards of education, since its inception. The world class education imparted to the students by the highly qualified faculty of LUMS, promotes research and intellectual growth among the students. This multi-disciplinary institute delivers unparalleled and research based education to about 4000 students each year.
